Food - Shelter - Clothing

The traditional list of basic needs is food, shelter and clothing, but when did these three “needs” become an extension of ourselves? We are now defined by our choices. At any time, on any day, you can turn on the TV or open a magazine and find a show or article that is specifically about food – what should you be eating, clothing – what should you be wearing or housing - designing and/or decorating.

I have to admit I am slightly obsessed with the British TV show Grand Designs and all of its offshoots. Kevin McCloud is one of my favourite celebrities. I have all the DVDs, I subscribe to the monthly magazine and will stop whatever I’m doing to watch any repeats if they come on TV.

There are so many reasons I love this show.  The main reason is I get to live vicariously through other people whilst they create their home. I experience their highs and lows, sympathise their disappointments, budget blow-outs and failures and celebrate their success and jubilation at a finished home.

I also get to see all the latest trends in the housing industry which include many products that aren’t yet available in Australia. I have learnt about sustainability, energy efficiency and maximising space. Kevin has taught me about design and presentation and how important these principles are when planning your home or even preparing your home for sale.

I have become more appreciative of design. I love that it can tell a story about the original owner/builder. It often represents a time period through both layout and materials.

Home design has changed so much in the time I’ve been working directly in the real estate industry. The 90’s were all about size! Big kitchens and open plan living was high on the list. As technology evolved, a dedicated study was a must have and we suddenly couldn’t live without a second living room or an ensuite!

In the 00’s with the introduction of reality cooking shows; we all decided we were chefs and streamlined MasterChef kitchens made an entrance with high end appliances (I still don’t know what a steam-oven does), butler’s pantry – (this I love!) and outdoor kitchens. We saw dedicated media rooms with surround sound speakers and cinema style chairs. Bedrooms became smaller and so too did the backyards!

This decade has seen a return to a more simplified floorplan. While the kitchen is still the heart of the home is has become more integrated within the open plan design. Seamless cabinetry and hidden appliances plus smart technology is now utilised in every room with the implementation of wi-fi. A dedicated study is no longer a requirement and bedrooms are starting to increase in size due to multi-generational living.

I wonder what 2020 will bring? I can’t wait to find out.
